Investing in New Opportunities @ Intergraphics

Some screen printers may consider taking chances on new technology too risky, but Intergraphics sees it as a gateway to experimentation and product expansion. Learn how the shop’s adventurous and fearless spirit made it a successful graphics provider for an international client base.

Intergraphics’ art department houses six employees who use Macintosh computers equipped with programs such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Macromedia Freehand, and Adobe Photoshop. The art department also is equipped with an AGFA Stingray 6300 imagesetter with a Kodak processor and Roland Quadra F 540 large-format exposure systems. In the screen-preparation area, you’ll find a Dane screen washer and dehazing equipment.

The production department is home to three large-format presses, including a Viking XLS, a Renegade XLS, and a Cameo (Figure 4). You’ll also find three digital printers from Roland, Océ, and Mutoh. On the screen side are several medium-sized presses from M&R, Argon, and Svecia. Other equipment includes a Super Primex pad printer, the Dymoflex doming system, and the Galaxy press. For finishing, Intergraphics uses Brause thermal die cutters of various sizes, a Polar flat cutter, an assortment of laminators, a grommet foot press, and a D’Slugger waste-stripping machine.

These tools allow Intergraphics to create variety of products for clients across a range of markets. Fleet graphics and vehicle wraps are big ones for Intergraphics (Figure 5).  Some jobs might require the staff to print graphics for as many as 13 panels for one trailer, with consistency across each panel. Jones says that the skill and technique required to print on multiple panels with such continuity is quite challenging.

One print job required the team to print on melamine-covered plywood for a game called Cool Curling, which is very similar to shuffleboard. Intergraphics also prints labels, from a high-volume order of roll labels to short runs of sheet labels, for both indoor and outdoor applications (Figure 6). 0 The screen-printed labels come with CSA and UL approval ratings.

Typical applications require the folks at Intergraphics to print onto pressure- sensitive vinyl, Lexan, polyester, polypropylene, Coroplast, foam board, glass, and banner material. Print jobs range in size from 1 x 2 in. to 52 x 144 in.


Keeping it LEAN

Intergraphics is proud to be a member of the LEAN Consortium, which consists of manufacturers that belong to the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association and adopt a lean concept of manufacturing. The group meets on a monthly basis to share ideas and offers training programs. Companies within the group also visit each other’s facilities and make suggestions for making processes more efficient and effective.
