Rigid Media: A Survey of Suppliers

The growing role of wide-format flatbed and hybrid inkjet printers in graphics production is perhaps most evident in the increasing number of manufacturers that make rigid media for these devices. This source list will introduce you to several companies that offer print-ready rigid media at least 24 in. wide.

Acriglas Metallic acrylic sheets come in a brushed (4 x 4 ft) or a matte finish (4 x 6 ft), and range in thickness from 0.125-0.5 in. It’s available in 16 colors and 10 textures. Matte-surface Neon Lights is compatible with UV inks. Translucent sheets range in thickness from 10.125-0.5 in., are available in a variety colors, and are offered in a standard 4 x 6-ft size.

Dibond consists of two sheets of 0.012-in. aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core, pre-painted with a polyester finish, and available in 2-, 3-, and 4-mm thicknesses and in sizes up to 60 x 120 in. It’s compatible with solvent and UV printers.

Sintra is an expanded PVC board with a satin finish. It’s available in thicknesses from 1-13 mm and in various colors and sheet sizes. Sintra Print-Optimized is designed for printing at higher speeds. Gatorfoam, polystyrene foam between Luxcell wood-fiber veneer liners, is available in sheets up to 60 x 120 in. Gatorplast features an extruded polystyrene foam core laminated on both sides with high-impact polystyrene.
 

Fome-Cor, a foam-centered board with clay-coated paper liners, is available in stock sheets up to 60 x 96 and 48 x 120 in. It’s compatible with water-based, solvent, or UV inkjets. Polystyrene-based Fome-Cor JetMount board has a higher density and is designed for direct printing and mounting of digital images.

Foam-X, a polystyrene foamboard with clay-coated paper liners, is a recovery board design for shape retention when die cut. Structa-Board, which is composed of an extruded polystyrene core and man-made wood fiber veneer facers, comes in 48 x 96-in. boards that are 0.187 in. thick.
