Rigid Media: A Survey of Suppliers

The growing role of wide-format flatbed and hybrid inkjet printers in graphics production is perhaps most evident in the increasing number of manufacturers that make rigid media for these devices. This source list will introduce you to several companies that offer print-ready rigid media at least 24 in. wide.

The HartBoard substrate line is compatible with pigmented or dye-based aqueous, solvent, and UV-curable inks. HartPrint is a foam-centered board compatible with aqueous (pigmented or dye) and solvent inks, offers satin or matte surface, thickness of 0.187 or 0.25 in., and is available in sheets up to 48 x 96 in. Harty is a 0.25-in. clay-coated, foam-centered board available in sheets up to 48 x 96 in. Other foamboards include color-coated HartCote (0.187 in. thick and in sheets up to 40 x 60 in.) and an all-plastic HartPlus with a white surface (0.25 in. thick in 48 x 96-in. sheets).

AlumaJet is an inkjet-printable aluminum compatible with water-based dye and pigmented inks. Sheets range up to 20 x 24 in. and thicknesses range from 0.005-0.016 in. AlumaJet comes in matte, satin, and brushed finishes.

SmartGrain inkjet-printable wood veneer is compatible with most aqueous, solvent, and mild-solvent inks. It’s 0.018 in. thick and comes in sheets up to 24 x 30 in. Custom sizes up to 55 in. wide are available.

IntePro Graphic Arts Material sheets are either extruded polypropylene or high-density polyethylene. They’re available with a conical flute or X-flute for a smooth, rigid printing surface. InteFoam is an expanded PVC foam board with a matte finish. It’s available in a variety of colors and thicknesses from 1-25 mm.
