Posted on Fri, 19 Jan 2007 at 3:23

Each year, Squeegeeville Studio presents training courses and workshops to fit the needs of people who want to learn more about the art, technology, and methods employed using the screenprinting process. We have posted the monthly studio course dates below for 2007, plus information and examples about our Traveling Courses, Multi-colour T-shirt Printing, Specialized Training, and Art Print Experience.

INTRO TO SCREENPRINTING –Small group courses
We will be running one scheduled* group ( max 4 people) Intro to Screenprinting class per month Sat-Sun 9:30-5pm at Squeegeeville Studio on Vancouver Island. BC Canada.
Novices will like it because it is easy to follow and doesn't require any 'artistic' skill. Practicing screenprinters who want to upgrade their knowledge will like it because we can quickly teach up-to-date techniques that will make you more efficient and give you better printing results. This is all about hands-on learning the basic fundamentals of screenprinting with photostencils. We use waterbased inks, and also take some time to learn the applications and history of our favorite print process.
The studio is situated in an incredible garden setting in one of the nicest spots in the world, and I have lots of toys for participants to play with including a SOLAR vacuum exposing system, 2 hand vacuum print tables, a cd printer, a semiauto 2-pole HANKY press, and a TMI Jaguar 3x4 air lift one arm. Oh, and a G4 Mac and an Epson 3000 plus a light table and lots of hand (pens, brushes, knives and rubylith, etc) art tools.

Areas we will cover:

Art and Film prep -learn different ways of putting your art on films, about multicolor images, what works, what doesn't.
Screens - mesh, emulsion, exposure, reclaiming
Inks types, additives, colour mixing and prep
Make Ready and Registration
Printing Techniques on various materials

Participants will go through a 'cycle' of screenprinting an image created using a variety of art tools and film types. Screens will be coated, exposed, and reclaimed. A sample run of each design helps the students see the relationships between the various elements of the screen printing process and how they all work together.
During the second half of the 2 day course, students are free to create and print their own simple designs, while practicing the steps learned earlier. With the small class size everyone gets lots of hands-on opportunity, and we make an attempt to accommodate small runs of art prints or different materials. (glass, silk, ceramics, 1-colour shirts, fabric, wood and leather are just some of the materials we have imaged during our courses – let me know in advance if you have specific applications you want to cover)
Included is a copy of ‘Screenprinting Today, the Basics’.

Traveling Courses

Over the past few years, we have traveled to California, Austin Texas, Seattle, the Yukon, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Stratford and quite a few other locations to conduct training courses and printing demonstrations. If you have a studio or workplace and want to host a course we want to hear from you. We can help you set it up, find students, and bring screenprinting to your neighbourhood.

Following are some pictures and links to past classes.
Langley BC – The sessions at Monsterpress are always good because we have Scott and Marty available to cover the shirt side, and room to accommodate a bigger class but still keep everyone occupied. The location just outside of Vancouver in a commercial t-shirt and poster shop can’t be beat, attracting attendees from Washington State, Vancouver Island, and even Calgary! Want to learn about sepping art for shirts? Scott’s your guy. This course usually has 10 spaces available. Contact them directly through the website to find out about the next one.
Toronto Ont. - Popfuel, a Toronto co-op screen printing studio, hosted our first Hogtown Squeegee session in Oct 06. In less than a year Jeremy has put together an amazing studio with a healthy membership and great equipment. Complete with pinball and inhouse film output, this is a great place to learn. If you are in the Toronto region and are interested in attending a weekend course in the fall, please contact Jeremy at Popfuel.

Whitehorse, Yukon We’ve traveled north to do a number of courses, hosted by local organizations like Yukon Art Society, SYANA, and the Territorial government. Although a challenge logistically to move and setup an entire studio, these were incredible experiences for me. Meeting a lot of nice people was just a bonus, and we all had a blast making some incredible art.

(Movie file)
Stratford Ont A group of the people who work behind the scenes at the world famous Shakspeare Festival put on this workshop to get updated on using new low tox waterbase technology and improved photostencils. The host put together this little montage that gives you a peak at what we did in an old barn converted into a fabric studio. (They imprint the fabric for period costumes for the festival and contract to Broadway shows)

Multi-colour T-shirt Printing
Note we only have one-colour t-shirt printing equipment at Squeegeeville studio. If you are looking for an advanced multi colour t-shirt course using a carousel, it needs to be in a facility with proper equipment – a 4 or 6 colour manual press, tunnel dryer or flash, textile inks…. Both Monsterpress (near Vancouver) and Popfuel (Toronto) have this and we can include t-shirt basics in the INTRO COURSE.

Specialized Training
In many cases people or companies want specific training that relates to their product or production process. Through the years we have helped waterski manufacturers, software packagers, glass and ceramic tile printers, wooden box makers, t-shirt start-ups, youth groups, and fine art printmakers get the most out of their facilities and workers. We can custom design a training course in our facility or yours. Use the contact form or call 250 334-2598 to discus what we can do for you.

Art Print Experience
If you are a practicing artist, capable of creating your own films, have rudimentary screen printing knowledge or a strong desire to learn, and want to take an active roll in the printing of your Limited Edition, we offer a unique train and print opportunity. We offer full day rentals of the studio and equipment with personalized instruction on the equipment and printing assistance when required. Rental includes a small studio apartment with private entrance, all production materials except paper, films and inks. Please use the contact form or phone 250 334-2598 to discuss rates and availability.
