Emulsion has a swirl pattern once it has dried?

Posted on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 at 21:01

I'm using a High Resolution Blue (Photo Coat Emulsion), my problem is when I coat my screen and let it dry, once the screen is dry the emulsion has a swirl effect and feels wavy. Strange I Know! I have coated six screens with this emulsion and have no problems until now. So I expose the screen and everything washes out with no problem. But when I put them up to dry the stencil starts to break down and the edges of the art work start to wrinkle. Has anyone ran into this problem before? If so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know about swirly, but 'wavey' sounds like not enough pressure during the coat, or you started and stopped, causing thick and thin spots in the coverage.
You should 'rescoop' if you notice the coating has gone down unevenly, just push a bit harder and scoop without a bead in the coater edge, this will get rid of the uneven parts.
When you expose and wash out an uneven coating, the thick parts don't expose properly (they are underexposed) and so come off during washout. An even coat will get rid of this problem, assuming you have your exposure time down.

Hope that helps
